This sound art piece (composed of sounds collected collaboratively, edited in Audacity, and arranged in GarageBand) tells the story of an adventure. In doing so, it invokes one of the oldest and most common metaphors in art and language - Life is a Journey.
Our traveler encounters obstacles on this journey. The first of these obstacles represent a prominent dichotomy, that of Life versus Death. This representation is brought about through the use of distorted baby noises,
both laughter and crying, and abruptly ending those noises.
Another dichotomy explored by this piece is that of Warmth versus Cold. These binary opposites are used in the sounds of crackling fires, boiling water, and footsteps through the snow. The first and last thirds of the piece are dominated by cold, while the middle conflict is characterized by warmth.
Cold in this piece represents the chilly monotony of everyday life. Being stuck in a rut. Unthinkingly moving forward.
Warmth, on the other hand, represents fear, the adrenaline of making a choice, and the unknown future.
Thank you for listening. Bon Voyage.
